DOHA: Minister of Municipality and Environment H E Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie said on Thursday Qatar attaches great importance to food security.
This is in addition to the development of natural resources to increase production and raising levels of self-sufficiency.
Speaking on the eve of World Food Day, which falls on 16 October, marking the formation of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Al Subaie said the Ministry has adopted a strategy aimed at enhancing production of vegetables, red meat, poultry, eggs and fish.
The Minister said the strategy has helped Qatar make rapid strides toward self-sufficiency in plant, animal and fish production.
He pointed out the participation of Qatar with many countries and international organisations in World Food Day celebrations comes this year in exceptional circumstances when the world is battling the coronavirus pandemic.
He pointed out the slogan of this year’s celebration – ‘Grow, Nourish, Sustain Together’ – aims to increase awareness of the importance of food for healthy growth of future generations, while preserving sustainability as reports indicate that nearly 690 million people suffer from hunger.
In addition, two billion people are suffering from what is called hidden hunger, which is a lack of vitamins and minerals. He also stressed FAO’s emphasis on facilitating access to safe food for everyone and urged governments to provide food for their people and to invest seriously in agriculture.
